Underground water leaks take place when an underground water supply pipe leaks or breaks, either at its length or where it connects to fittings.

Leaks and breaks happen because of shifting ground, invasive roots, rusting or freezing pipes. But the question is, How do we find a water leak underground? There are places to check around the house and signs to look for. Water leaks can occur for many reasons, like a water main break due to eroding, shifting of the soil, or pressure on the pipes.

Of course, a pipe leak inside your house is usually easy to find because you can observe water pooling on the floor, dripping of water from a ceiling, or making the wall wet. But finding a leak in your yard can be something else. Underground water leaks are difficult to find because they’re frequently buried deep below the surface, beneath driveways, or in similarly challenging situations.

Steps For Finding Underground Water Leaks

Here are different ways to find if you have an underground water leak:

  • Check your water meter.

Most home water meters are situated near the street or curb in front of a home. They are usually in a box that’s buried, with a top that covers the box at ground level. A number of these boxes are concrete, and so are their lids—so the lid can be hefty. You can usually take the lid off of the box by placing large screwdriver or a hook into a slot in it and then lifting it over from the box.

Steps to follow:

  1. Turn off the main water valve of your house and check the water meter for water usage. You’ll get to know whether you have a water leak underground.
  2. When located, ensure there is no water running in your house by turning off your home’s main water valve.
  3. Switch off all the fixtures, faucets, and appliances that use water.
  4. Look at your water meter, a small white, red, or blue triangle for the leak indicator. If the needle spins so, it means you have a water leak underground. Or, if the needle is still, so you maybe don’t leak underground.
  5. If there is no leak indicator in your meter, then record the current meter reading. Leave the main water valve off for an hour. Then, go back and again observe the meter reading again. If the reading changes, so it shows that you have a water leak underground.
  • Check out your water bills.

You will not easily observe underground water leak such as the sound of dripping water or water pooling on the floor. Usually, the first thing you will observe is a rapid increase in water bills.

  • Call a professional water leak detection plumbers.

Finding you have a water leak underground is just the beginning. You should call professional plumbers to detect precisely where the leak is situated underground.

How professional find an underground water leak?

Professional leak detectors’ methods to determine an underground leak include charging the pipes with nitrogen, an inert gas.

When the pressurized gas determines a leak, it comes snuffing out, producing a loud buzz.

Signs of an underground leak

Here are few signs that indicate a leak may be happening underground:

  • An area of uncommonly wet soil in your yard.
  • An area of thick, lush grass or vegetation growing faster than it is in the surrounding areas.
  • Sinkholes in your yard.
  • An observable decrease in water pressure or flow volume.
  • Rust, air, or dirt in the water supply.
