The importance of landscaping around many business premises is often overseen or forgotten. Which is a shame, as you can only make a first impression once. When customers walk up to a shop, factory or office, they will 100% notice their surroundings. It would be a catastrophe if one of them stumbles over uneven paving or slips on a mossy surface. This could not only result in unhappy customers but also in injuries and claims.
Surely you take care of the inside of your property. You will probably clean regularly and make sure the decorations are up to date. No ugly bare patches on your walls. No carpets that are worn through in places.
So why not treat your outside with the same care? We strongly suggest to take care of the outside of your building too.
Mark your parking spaces
First, your customers will have to find a parking space. Most business premises will have dedicated parking spaces. Make sure the lines that define the spaces are clear. So it is easy to park within these lines.
These lines are there to optimize the number of car park spaces available. If someone cannot see the lines, it is highly likely that he or she will park in a way that might take up to two spaces. Which then gives your other customers less space. So make sure the division lines can do their job.
Keep the area clean
Make sure the area is cleared of litter. This does not have to take long. A quick check when you arrive in the morning to make sure there is no litter lying around. No McDonald’s packaging or chewing gum left the night before.
If you have a lot of footfall it would be good to provide a bin, so that people have a proper place to get rid of things they urgently no longer seem to be want to carry. And empty this bin regularly. Do not give anybody a reason to throw things carelessly on the ground.
Pretty-up your landscape
Gardening is not everybody’s forte. And especially for busy businesses, it is important to find ways to get maximum result with as little effort as possible.
You can not only attract customers with a stunning landscaping but you can also make them stay longer. Especially for hospitality venues, it is important to encourage people to stay as long as possible. Give them somewhere to sit. This can be done with actual seats with tables or benches, but also with low walls or even a fountain if you have space.
Go with the flow
If your type of business is such that you need people to come into your building, then you can add a directional flow to your design. This should be easy to follow and make people curious to see what will be “around the corner”. Your landscape design could, for example, incorporate your company colours. Or match the colours of your building.
Think of the future
When planning your plants, hedges, shrubs, bushes and trees, consider how they will mature. Think of the future. Plants will often fill out spaces more than expected. So choose the plants and their position wisely.
Invest in regular maintenance
It will be counterproductive to spend money and time on landscaping and then not being able to keep it looking good. Within a season your landscaping can look tatty, uncared for and horrible. Therefore it is important to make sure that maintaining your area is easy and quick, so it will not be a chore to keep your plants look happy and healthy.
